Lessons
July 8th, 2014 Posted in writingIn last Sunday’s gospel reading, Jesus tells people, “Come to me . . . Learn from me.” Most of us are familiar with education. We know how to study, take tests and do writing assignments. But Jesus is not talking about taking a course or reading a book, for the way he taught was through his life and death and rising, through the words he spoke, the deeds he did and the people he associated with. He invites us to learn from these things.
But we don’t all learn the same lessons at the same time or in the same way. Just as we each have a unique relationship with Jesus, his lessons for us are unique and personal. For instance, if you asked me what lesson he’s taught me, I’d say it’s to focus my attention more on God’s love and less on my own inadequacies. A close second would be to worry less about the future. I’m still learning that one.
What has Jesus taught you? What is he still teaching you? If you are willing, please write in a sentence or two what you have learned or are learning from Jesus. Then share them through the comments link that appears in the line just below the title of this post. I think that these comments will show how Jesus has been our teacher and continues to be.
(Note: If you want to comment and have received this post directly through email or it’s been forwarded to another location like Twitter or the Marquette High web page, you’ll need to access the entry “Lessons” on www.frankmajka.com and then enter your comments there. The “Lessons” posting will stay up permanently, so you can comment whenever you like and also read what others have learned or are presently learning from Jesus.)

He’s taught me that amazing faith is sometimes found where you might least expect it, and that it’s important to see the best in others. Perhaps most importantly, he teaches me that he cares about me and that I matter–then challenges me to go and love in a similar way.

That the things that frustrate me most about others are often the faults that I am struggling to see, repair, and turn over to Jesus in myself.

He continues to teach me (and I am not always a great student!), how to walk the fine line of parenting — knowing when to “teach” or guide my teenage sons, and when to let go and allow them to figure out how to do it themselves (which includes allowing them to “fail,” the hardest thing for me to do.) God’s message continues to be: “If I gave YOU free will, why can’t you give your children the same gift?” It’s like the song from “Children of Eden” says: “The hardest part of Love… is the letting go.”

The word that came immediately to mind was “compassion”. For me that sums it all up.
